Joseph George Tirrell and Esther Spencer

Were married on 13th June 1886 in Cheriton, Kent.

Joseph George Tirrell

was born in March 1861 in Little Harrowden, Northamptonshire His parents were Thomas Tirrell and Eliza Toseland.

Esther Spencer

was born on 13th June 1860 in Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire. Her parents were George Spencer and Rhoda Gates.



Joseph and Esther had ten children. From the list below you will see that they were born in many different locations. According to Joseph and Esther marriage certificate, Joseph was working as an excavator. This was a term used for a railway navvy who was employed in the excavating of land for the building of the railways and railway tunnels. Joseph's work took him all around the country to the different locations where railway tunnels were being built. The family finally settled in Yorkshire where their last child Eliza Rose was born in 1904.

Their children were:

Joseph George was born on 23rd March 1887 in Rochford, Essex. He married Olive Elizabeth Scraggs on 3rd July 1909 in Rotherham, Yorkshire. Joseph and Olive had 10 children, their names were: Leah, Esther, Violet, Marjory, Mary, Elsie, Ralph, George, Thomas and Derek. Joseph George died in 1930 in Maltby, Yorkshire.

Florence was born in the September quarter of 1889 in Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire. She married George Jarvis, date as yet unknown.

Elizabeth was born in the June quarter of 1891 in Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire. She married Frank Davis in the December quarter of 1911 in Rotherham, Yorkshire.

Jane was born in the September quarter of 1892 in Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire.

Herbert William, born 13th April 1894 in Amptill, Bedfordshire.

Frances Beatrice was born in the September quarter of 1896 in Woodford, Northamptonshire. She was always known as Beatrice. She married William Barber in the September quarter of 1921 in Rotherham, Yorkshire. Beatrice died in about 1977

Frank was born in the December quarter of 1897 in Woodford, Northamptonshire.

Violet was born in the June quarter of 1900 in Claycross, Derbyshire. She married Rowland Shore in the December quarter of 1925 in Rotherham, Yorkshire. Rowland died on 21st November 1972 and Violet on 5th November 1992. They were both buried in Maltby, Yorkshire.

Lily was born on 4th February 1903 at Carrside, Epworth, Lincolnshire. Lily married Harry Singleton in the March quarter of 1921 in Rotherham, Yorkshire.

Eliza Rose was born 23rd May 1904 in Foxholes, Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield. She was known as Rose.


The following information about Joseph and Esther is from the 1891 census. They were living in Chinley in Derbyshire where I believe Joseph was a labourer employed in the building of Cowburn Tunnel which takes the railway under the Pennines. His brother Walter was living close to him with his family and was also employed as a railway navvy.
